So, here we are in the Romantic era. We stumble upon Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, Keats on the heels of the Neoclassical era. We saw amazing wit and satire (with Pope and Swift) as a part of the last age, but the Romantic Period dawned with a different poetic in the air. Of the writers of the second generation, only Byron enjoyed fame while he was alive, more fame than any of the other romantic writers, with perhaps the exception of Scott, but Keats and Shelley had relatively few readers while they were alive.


It was not until the Victorian era that Keats and Shelley became recognized as major romantic poets. However, even within its own period of existence, few Romantics would have agreed on a general meaning. Perhaps this tells us something. To speak of a Romantic era is to identify a period in which certain ideas and attitudes arose, gained currency and in most areas of intellectual endeavor, became dominant. Harmony in the Romantic era Harmony became more complex, adding chromaticism , increased use of semitones and unusual progressions, and in general going beyond the Classical rules concerning the progression of keys and harmonies.


During the Romantic period major transitions took place in society, as dissatisfied intellectuals and artists challenged the Establishment. In Englan the Romantic poets were at the very heart of this movement. They were inspired by a desire for liberty, and they denounced the exploitation of the poor. Romanticism, attitude or intellectual orientation that characterized many works of literature, painting, music, architecture, criticism, and historiography in Western civilization over a period from the late 18th to the mid-19th century. Romantic music is a stylistic movement in Western classical music associated with the period spanning the nineteenth century, commonly referred to as the Romantic era (or Romantic period).


Most musical forms of the Classical era were in use during the Romantic era : the sonata-form remained one of the most important formal structures. However, these forms were not as clear and precise as they were in the Classical era : boundaries were often vague and overlapping. And it’s easy to see why!

His music and compositional style show a clear development from the classical period into the romantic period.
