Neogene period

The Neogene is sub-divided into two. From afar, Earth looked much as it does today when the Neogene period began. But looks are deceiving. Mountains rose, and sea levels fell.

Neogene Period , the second of three divisions of the Cenozoic Era. Like the preceding Paleogene, the Neogene period witnessed a trend toward global cooling, especially at higher latitudes (it was immediately after the end of the Neogene , during the Pleistocene epoch, that the earth underwent a series of ice ages interspersed with warmer interglacials).

It is the second of two periods that mark our current era, the Cenozoic, beginning at the end of the Paleogene period (and Oligocene epoch). This period follows the Paleogene Period and is succeeded by the Quaternary Period. This Period , our period began about million years ago and it continues up to the present time. Relationships In the Neogene period we see large continental shifts which lead to the connection, of other continents resulting in continental bridges.

Rodent-size (and perhaps larger) mammals emerge suddenly free to fill the void. Over the next million years, they grew in size, number, and diversity.

As the period came to a close, life-forms still common today filled the seas, dominated the lan and had taken to the air. It began million years ago and continues to the present. The characteristic trend throughout the Neogene period has been global cooling and the death of forests which had previously filled the center of continents such as Asia, North America, even Australia. For marine stratigraphy however, defining the ages is much different. Neogene synonyms, Neogene pronunciation, Neogene translation, English dictionary definition of Neogene.

Neogene or late Neogene of clay mineral assemblage records do not fit exactly into our general scheme, because they are situated at both climatic northern or southern boundaries.

Records are sparse and sediment sequences are often restricted to the Paleogene with clay-mineral data for Quaternary deposits frequently lacking. Miocene and Pliocene Epochs. The dramatic cooling phases of the Neogene lead to more distinctive latitudinal biotic zones.

Neogene definitions: a geologic period and system in the International Commission on Stratigraphy Geologic Timescale starting 23. There was no grass until million years ago in the Neogene period (part of the Cenozoic period ).

In this same time period there was the development of flowering plants. Some scientists think this harder to eat and digest plant species was in part the cause of the downfall of grazing dinosaurs and the rise of grazing mammals. Correlations between these clusters and the reference stratigraphical units of the Tagus Basin, as well as with local and global events, are proposed.
